Alternative medicine meets magic in Paraplegia, an 8-minute (continuous loop) video with sound. When modern medicine fails, an ancient and natural remedy of hirudotherapy – the use of medicinal leeches - is employed. This treatment, combined with the magician/surgeon’s dexterous slight of hand, produces unexpected transformations. Placed in the hands of another, the subject/patient is taken, as if in and out of consciousness, through a choreographed intervention that involves intimacy and trust, risk and uncertainty. Hoping for a cure, settling for anything that could help, the characters repeat the endless ritual. Together they forfeit the embarrassing notion of future and settle for an extended present.
